Bounced Cheques Are A Criminal Offense

Bouncing a cheque is classed as a misdemeanor under the Dubai Penal Code, and constitutes a minor criminal offense. Typical penalties include imprisonment for a term commensurate with the amount of the cheque and / or a fine ranging from AED 1,000 – AED 30,000 depending on the facts and circumstances of the case. Ignorance of the law is no defense.
